Phil & Narelle Traynorsays:

The memories I’d most like to share about my brother Sonny start when I was a little girl living on the farm “Bunama”. We used to go out on the back of the truck, Dad driving and Sonny, Hart & I throwing bales of hay off to feed the sheep. We had horses at that time. Keftan (grand ex race horse) Cherokee, chestnut with a beautiful white star on her nose and Prince, the little Shetland horse Sonny taught me to ride.
Sonny went to Urrbrae Agricultural College, boarded with Mrs. Hobbs while down there. I remember being so excited every Friday night going to meet him getting off the “Blue Bird” which in those days was the train that brought him home to Brinkworth from Adelaide.
It was fun to go for a ride on the back of the Combine. One time I recall Dad was driving and my friend Wendy (Herb’s sister)and I were on the back with Sonny. He got caught up in the harrows and was carrying on a bit. Wendy and I were laughing at first as we thought he was just mucking about, being funny to make us laugh as he often did. Luckily we realized this was no joke and alerted Dad. No harm done.
I remember Sonny’s maroon coloured pinstripe suit which looked great on him with his curly hair which he hated but we loved.
He was over the moon when he purchased a quadraphonic sound system. He set it up in the lounge room of the farmhouse. He bought Neil Diamond’s “Hot August Night” album and we all had great fun watching Sonny point to each speaker in the room as new sounds and beats were heard.
In later years my husband Phil and I shared Sonny’s passion for the Port Adelaide Football Club. We would often chat about what was happening re footy. It was disappointing that in Casino he wasn’t able to watch many Port games. Nonetheless he remained loyal. When he and Fran were travelling in their first motor home he noticed others in the parks displaying flags to support their team in whichever code and of course sent me a request to send one up for him.
It’s no secret Sonny’s love for South Australian produce including King George Whiting, metwurst, white pudding and pasties. There were always some of these in our luggage on our visits and he restocked on he and Fran’s visits to SA.
Forever the stalwart, it seems Sonny endured more as a result of his cancer than he ever let on.
Love you Sonny. RIP

Gavin and Margi Millssays:

So pleased we took a 36 hour trip from Brinkworth to Casino on Friday 7th November 2025 to say good bye to my brother Sonny. May he rest in peace in the beautiful lawn cemetery in Casino. How Great Thou Art by Elvis and The Green Green Grass Of home by Tom were very fitting as we all bade him goodbye.
