David had a huge influence on me in a golden period of my life, btw 17 and 24, in the late 70s, early 80s. It was year 11 and 12, mates and Nick names. For 7 years I was Henry, and to the Brecks I’ll always be Henry and I love that.
I discovered girls, beer, rock music at Ingleburn RSL and cricket. Dave was there when I hooked up with my first girl friend, he was the guy I moved out of home with, and with Andrew we spent our time together, on weekends, on weeknights, on holidays.
He had that lime green mini and a water bed, his laugh was loud and deep, and he had so much confidence, and he made you feel like you could do anything.
Behind all this, was cricket, it was a constant during that period. We loved summer. We’d play cricket on a Saturday and then afterwards go to memorial to catch up with other teams.
One day, David was playing away, and arrived , came upmto ke and said ‘Ask me what I got’. So I did, what did you get. 163 was the reply, huge smile. Apparently he padded away the first three balls he faced, and then slog swept the fourth over backwards square leg for six. When he batted, he was always looking to score runs, and he’d hit the ball bloody hard.
I remember when he left Ingleburn and went to play for City, and Val couldn’t bring herself to say it.
When we received our HSC results we all gathered at David’s, because you and Val where holidaying at Suffolk park. We had many a party while you guys where away.
When, we came up to Suffolk park, with Andrew we’d fish off the beach, go play golf at the course, drive to Ballina RSL to see bands like Mondo Rock, and we’d play cricket outside Suffolk park, or watch cricket.
I remember watching Mike Whitney bat for ages, to see off Ray Hadlee for a draw, and we cheered, as Aussie cricket was doing it tough back then.
I remember going to a test with David, Andrew and Lindy to watch the poms in 82 and we sat on the Hill. It rained out two sessions, so we went back the next day.
I remember going to the 1981 RL GF, to.watch the Eels and the Jets play, and sat on the wall.above the Hill.
When we moved out, we went to.see INXS at the Horden, before they where huge.
But most of.all, I remember him. His warmth, his laugh, and that bloody confidence.
I always thought we’d connect again, go watch a test, a Grand Final, go bowling, catch up over a beer or two.
I hope whereevt his spirit is, that the pitch is flat, the outfield is fast and he wins the toss and Bats.
His friend always
Henry.
One final thing.
In primary school, David made the Liverpool Region soccer side, and they played a tournament over at Manly. He would have been 11. I was also in that side, living at Revesby. When I saw him with Andrew at the first party in 1979, I remembered him. It had been 5 years, but he was just that person you never forget, that has such an impact on you.
My sincerest condoleances to PA Brecko, Dale and the rest of the family.
I will always remember Dave his love of sports, particularly cricket and how he was full of energy.
Sympathy to you Mr Breck, I never met david but having you as his father he would have been a gentleman and kind to all he came across
I first met David when he was still in a stroller and followed his life for the next 60 years, witnessing his many sporting and life achievements along the way.
Ann and I were saddened by his sudden loss.
We certainly have many happy memories to hold on to.
Ray, Mark, Dale and family, you are all in our thoughts at this very sad time.
With our sincere blessings.
Ann, Arthur and all our family.
Our deepest condolences Ray, Mark and your extended family. It was such a shock when we received the news. David was a very talented cricketer and nice fellow. He will be missed and remembered forever.
Dear Ray and family
My deepest sympathy is extended to you all.
I couldn’t be there today in person for the funeral but have tuned in to the service and clearly Dave was well loved and respected by all, and such a credit to you and Val. I remember Dave as a very cheeky, confident little fella who never seemed to be without a smile on his face and this has come across in all the eulogies I heard today.
May he rest in peace.
Kind regards
Peter
